BIO

Hiroko’s art career began later in life, after a time as a musician. (A pianist and vocalist.) Hiroko’s work represents more than the simplicity of the landscapes we see – Her journey through life is unique but a life of ups and downs we all can relate to, and the landscapes of familiar and new places often help us work through the journeys of our own lives.

Many of Hiroko’s works are woodcuts – she has become a master of the carving technique, and the printmaking process. She combines layers of material in addition to the woodcut print on paper. The layers in her work give her woodcuts a sense of history – the images seem to represent the layers of life working together to form a combined new image of depth and beauty.

The lyrical quality of many of my pieces is a reflection of my musical background, and my work is a testament to perseverance through troubled times. Initially whilst coping with the loss of my beloved husband in 1985, making art was the way I grieved. Many monoprints resulted - ‘self-portraits’ of kimonos as symbolic representations of myself and my journey through grief. I moved on from this to newer work based on the natural world, but the pieces are still autobiographical and symbolic.
